Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has tried any of the products from a company called sunprecautions?

I spoke to a consultant at 1 800-882-7860, about a face guard, since it will soon be too hot to wear my ski mask.

I purchased an indigo one which the consultant said would protect my whole face.  It wraps around and can attach to my Noirs if I wish.  They face guards and other items, also come in lighter colors and since I am rather scary in my black hooded jacket, black large Noirs and black ski mask (I think about 1% of my skin is exposed BUT covered by K cream), that a lighter color might be more friendly,(although all the neighbors around the neighborhood still speak to me in a friendly ways).

The consultant,  Justine, said the mask had the equivalent protection of an spf 30. This she explained to me that a 30 Sun Protection Factor allowed you 300 minutes or 5 hours protection from the sun's rays.

Has anyone from the staff or otherwise looked into this and feels this is a good product for the MP souls who are avoiding the sun but must go out during the daylight hours?  How about the lighter colors?

Trooping along the "Marshall Protocol" way,    Arlene:cool:

Arlene,

I have purchased and used some of the Solumbra products because this company is a unique source for some of the items I wanted, such as beige-colored fabric gloves for summer wear and a hat with a neck drape for protecting my neck.

I pay little attention to the company's SPF ratings, since we are trying to protect our skin from all sun/light, not simply the factors that lead to skin cancer, which is what SPF was designed for assessing. (Many of these products were developed for patients who've had skin cancer or who have had serious burns;they have a different reason for protecting their skin. They are concerned only with UV rays.)

I can see your rationale for ordering a face guard from them, since I haven't seen these available anywhere else.

Belinda,

I appreciate your input.  I didn't know we could wear beige gloves.  I thought we had to wear only very dark, ie., black, indigo.  This is great news.  If the protection from the sun is total, then a lighter color would be so much easier for the summer.  :)

I wasn't totally sure of the rational for the dark colors except concerning reflection.  :)

  Thanks,

 Arlene

Arlene,

If you only have regular cloth gloves, you are correct that the best choice is dark-colored fabric.

I have two types of beige-colored gloves. One pair is from Sun Precautions, made of beige fabric, and you can see a photo at URL http://tinyurl.com/5v2n4 These gloves are made from a tightly-woven fabric made especially to block sunlight. They feel like lightweight leather. I have two pair of these; my first pair is so well-worn they are in tatters. I do enjoy wearing these lighter colored gloves, especially when driving. They do not draw as much attention as wearing black gloves in the summer. :)

The second type of light-colored gloves I have is made of leather (and lined), which provides very good skin protection from sun.

Belinda,
Are the other Solumbra/SunPrecaution products, like their jackets and hats, ok to purchase in non-black colors as well?  Or is it just the particular gloves that you mentioned that have the specially woven material?  I would love to get a red or blue (or even beige) light-weight jacket that they offer along with a beige or blue hat/face cover for the summer, so that I can retire my 'terrorist' black outfit.

Thank you,
Lisa

Lisa,

We know that there has been research evaluating how much UV rays are blocked by different fabrics and colors, and we used those results to make our recommendations to rely on black cotton or wool fabrics for the best protection.

The Solumbra products are made from a fabric developed specifically for its ability to block UV rays. See http://tinyurl.com/6fdnm

I am not endorsing their products, but I do think they may be used as tools in the MP. There are a few caveats, however.
1. The cost may be prohibitive for some people.
2. The other regular precautions for sun/light protection on the MP (restrictive NOIR sunglasses, avoiding sun/lights whenever possible) still need to be followed.

On the other hand, their products have features that are not readily found when searching for appropriate summer clothing. For instance, they offer a selection of *long* sleeves and *long* pants, collars and more covering than standard summer lines. They also feature breathing/cooling vents in items such as jackets that some people enjoy.

Keep in mind that these products were actually designed simply to keep people from getting sunburned, and we are seeking a much higher level of protection. They may be a useful tool for people who cannot avoid being outdoors, who have trouble finding clothing designed to provide enough skin covering, and who have the means to purchase this type of clothing.

Belinda
PS Avoid the sunscreens and sunglasses they offer, because they do not provide the kind of protection we need against sun/lights.

Hi Belinda and Lisa
A light color would be wonderful for the summer, just thinking black and sunshine is making me hot.  BTW Lisa, just this afternoon a woman was staring so hard at me in my black terrorist outfit, mask and all, I thought she was going to run her car into a pole, her head was turned all the was round!

I received the face guard and it is really blue-black but beautifully constructed and very comfortable to wear.  I was very impressed with the quality.
